Goalie Training: Building Confidence Before Technique
Age Group: U7–U15
Focus: Movement, confidence, fundamentals
Goalie development at younger ages is about comfort and confidence first—not perfection. The goal is to help young goalies move freely, read the puck, and enjoy the position.
What Matters Most for Young Goalies
- Balance and stance
- Efficient movement (not speed)
- Tracking the puck
- Confidence staying in the play
Core Goalie Foundations
1. Ready Stance
A good stance should feel:
- Athletic
- Balanced
- Relaxed (not stiff)
Key cues:
- Knees bent
- Chest tall
- Hands in front
- Eyes forward
2. Crease Movement Basics
Before worrying about saves:
- Shuffles
- T-pushes
- Recoveries
Smooth movement beats fast movement every time.
3. Puck Tracking
Young goalies should be encouraged to:
- Watch the puck all the way in
- Stay square
- Recover after every save
No diving. No desperation. Control first.
4. Rebound Awareness
At younger ages:
- Direct pucks to safe areas
- Reset to stance quickly
- Stay calm after the save
Simple At-Home Goalie Work
- Mirror stance in front of a window
- Light ball tracking drills
- Crease movement without pads
- Balance exercises
5–10 minutes is enough.
Parent Reminder
Progress isn’t linear. Confidence comes from repetition and support—not pressure.
