Before You Buy Hockey Gear: What Every Parent Should Know (U7–U15)
If you’re a hockey parent, you’ve probably felt it already:
the pressure to buy better gear.
Bigger pads. Newer sticks. “Pro-level” everything.
Here’s the truth most parents don’t hear early enough:
Better gear does not automatically create a better player.
Especially at the U7–U15 levels.
This Parent’s Playbook exists to help you make smart, confident decisions—without overspending, overthinking, or feeling behind.
The Biggest Mistake Parents Make
Most parents overspend on hockey gear early—not because they want to, but because they’re told:
“That’s what serious players use.”
At younger ages:
- Fit matters more than brand
- Comfort matters more than features
- Confidence matters more than price
Kids grow fast. Skill develops unevenly. Gear should support development, not chase status.
What Actually Matters When Buying Gear
Before buying anything, ask yourself:
- Does it fit properly right now?
- Can my child move freely and comfortably?
- Is it appropriate for their age and level, not their future level?
Mid-range gear is often the smartest choice for growing players. Top-tier gear is rarely necessary early on—and sometimes even works against proper technique.
Goalies: A Special Note
Goalie gear is expensive—and mistakes cost more.
For young goalies:
- Mobility > bulk
- Proper sizing > “they’ll grow into it”
- Confidence > looking like a pro
Oversized pads and gloves can slow development and create bad habits. We’ll break this down clearly in future posts.
